Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Aubry Beardsley
Today we spent our History of Modern Design class at the Victoria and Albert museum, just a short walk from our flat. We went to see 'The Cult of Beauty' exhibit on the Aesthetic Movement in the 1860's to the 1890's. The exhibit was filled with paintings, furniture, home decor and the like from the aesthetic movement which focused on the idea of art for art's sake. The founders of the movement wanted to escape the ugliness of the materializing world and have everything be about beauty without having it have a purpose. I love the ideals of the aesthetic movement not to mention that Oscar Wilde, my favorite playwright, was a big part of this movement. The ripeness of beauty and the satirical wit involved in the aesthetic designs and writings are so fantastic and I am glad to have seen this exhibit.
